The basis of the media
and social networks is communication and this is only the basis of societies.
Communication refers to social interaction, that is, to action and
the result
of communicating.
Communication must
have basic principles, which are in the process of communication itself, and
which are agreements that allow us to interact and live in society, as is
tolerance.
As well defined by the
RAE (Royal Spanish Academy), tolerance is "Respect for the ideas, beliefs
or practices of others when they are different or contrary to their own."
And this is a right that must be present in the media and social networks.
Tolerance must
therefore be a mandatory principle in the day to day of human beings and their
interrelations with the similar and means that surrounds them. Its use and
application must imply a commitment of total acceptance, which also does not
require any approval.
Tolerating is also
part of an attitude of the spirit that has to do with benevolence for understanding,
condescension, the admission of the other and the understanding of difference.
Tolerance is to excuse, also consent, dispense and even justify
attitudes different from one's own, even if they are not shared by an
individual subject or by a cultural, ethnic or religious group.
If we analyze this
concept and we include the terms, we can define that Tolerance is a fundamental
part for there to be freedom of expression and this is the central core and
heart of communications and social networks.
According to the
Spanish portal Dialogando, there are 10 main steps to promote and protect
tolerance in the media and social networks, these are:
1. Exercise your
freedom of expression responsibly. Reflect on how it affects other people and
their rights.
2. Stop to think
before making a criticism. Make sure you have enough and truthful information
to justify it.
3. Use a respectful
tone and language. Harmful or aggressive expressions undermine credibility and
provoke violent reactions.
4. Remember that insulting,
slandering, slandering or insulting is not making good use of freedom of
expression. Sometimes there may be legal consequences.
5. Keep in mind that
digital lynching is a form of violence. Avoid contributing to collective
aggression and do your part to avoid them.
6. Respect those who
are not like you or think differently. Diversity is an opportunity to learn and
enjoy.
7. Cut chains and
memes that ridicule ideas or discriminated groups. Religion, ethnicity, race,
nationality, language, ideology, sexual orientation or gender identity are not
grounds for exclusion.
8. Reject comments
that are a threat or incite violence against a social group. Opposing is the
best way to stop them.
9. Try to show your
support to whoever you consider to be the victim of unfair treatment. A small gesture can be very helpful.
10. Value the positive
and tolerant tone. Make the Internet a better place by encouraging and creating
a good atmosphere of coexistence and enjoyment.

As indicated by José
Pinto, in his section of the Internet page, Salamanca Al Día; "It is
recommended that we relax a little, the enormous tension that is felt in the
street, in the media and social networks only serves to make us worse, nothing
is solved with the stern gesture, the easy insult or contempt.
Citizens need to learn
the meaning of tolerance and respect for others, it is one thing to defend an
opinion and another to try to impose it through insult or slander. We no longer
live in a world of absolute truths, but in a time of small and individual
truths that demand respect, tolerance for the other and much, much education".

The communication, in any of its expressions must be free and sovereign, responsible and respectful, you will see, sharp and reliable, but above all Tolerant and honest. Each and every one of us is responsible for preserving this right with integrity and a broad concept of citizenship.
